The book Divergent is one of the most intriguing books I have ever read. The author really figured out how to project each character's life and feelings through words. The plot line was amazingly captivating and organized. There were many plot twists and good reasons for the reader to stay focused on the book. I rate this book five stars because I honestly believe that the plot could not have been set up better and that the characters could not have been portrayed more perfectly. The way that Veronica Roth, the author, portrayed the characters, it felt as if I personally knew them and was standing right alongside them. Their development was shown in the best ways. The imagery and word choice that the author used really contributed to make the reader even more intrigued.
A quest consists of five pieces. A) a quester, B) a place to go, C), a stated reason to go, D) trials and tribulations along the way, and E) a real reason to go. The quester for the main character is Trice. Her place to go is the faction Dauntless. Her stated reason to go is to find the faction to which she truly belongs in and if she will make it. Along the way she has many trials and tribulations which consist of: First she disappoints her parents by choosing Dauntless over Abnegation at the choosing ceremony; second she is bullied by the leader of Dauntless who trains each character and by some of her fellow "friends" and almost gets killed; third she has to overcome obsticals with discovering she is a divergent and truly doesn't belong to any certain one so she is truly lost and feeling alone. Her real reason to go on this quest is to find herself and to discover that she is divergent. In Divergent, the factionless are outcasts. Everyone looks down upon them as if they don't belong. They have to hide and sneak around and fight to survive because if they are discovered, it will be the end of them. This relates to the book Maus because in Maus, the Jews are hated, yelled at, talked about and mistreated. The Jews in the Holocaust had to run and hide to not be forced into the gas chambers and guaranteed a gruesome death. In both books, there is an oppressive government. In Divergent, the government is Abnegation, however the faction Erudite is taking over and setting traps and doing tests to find all of the Divergents. In Maus, the government during the Holocaust was run by the Nazis who would pick certain traits that show a character is a Jew and they would chase them and kill them in masses until they thought they killed them all. The Jews and the Divergents both had to go into hiding from their governments. Maus and Divergent are very much alike, however they have their differences. First, Divergent is a fiction book based on a girl who is just trying to find her place in life and find what her life will be like in a faction called Dauntless, while Maus is a non-fiction book where the main character Artie is just trying to interview his dad to find out what the Holocaust was like and what everyone had to go through to survive and escape the insane Hitler. Also, in Divergent they have factions. A faction is where they have rules and regulations for a job that every character in the faction participates in. The names of these are Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Erudite, and Dauntless. In Maus, there is no such thing as factions. It is a bunch of mice(Jews) running and hiding from cats and pigs to survive, escape and avoid the gas chambers. All in all the two books are quite different if the general plots are being compared. In this book, there are factions of living. Each one gets treated differently and the factions all have different jobs. In reality, there are counties. In each county have different tax prices and general laws. If the characters were to be put into real life, the Divergents(the characters who are factionless) would be the only ones to survive because they posses traits and characteristics of each faction. In reality each faction is a job and the characters who could only do that one job would not be able to function in the real world. If Trice were to be put in the real world she would survive with out a struggle for she falls in love, protects herself and others, can fight for what she wants and can survive on her own. In Beatrice's world, there are five factions that carry out the daily duties of civilized living. They are Abnegation which is in control of the government, Dauntless which is in charge of security both inside the city and at the city walls, Amity which is the faction that grows most of the food and fills the role of caregivers, Erudite which is in charge of education and research, and Candor which is in control of law and justice. A child is born to a faction, but once they reach about sixteen years of age, they are given an aptitude test to help them decide which faction they will live in for their rest of their lives. Those who choose to leave their own factions are free to do so but must pledge loyalty to that faction of their own family. The idea is sound with each faction teaching and cultivating the traits necessary for their functions, but the reality is jealousy and fighting among the factions. Beatrice is a sixteen-year-old member of the Abnegation faction as the story opens. She has been raised to be completely selfless but doesn't believe she fits into the ideals of her faction. All teens around sixteen years old undergo an aptitude test designed to help them decide which faction they should join. Beatrice and her older brother, Caleb, are among the teens undergoing the testing on a particular day. Beatrice is tested by a member of the Dauntless faction who reveals that Beatrice's results tag her as a "Divergent." The woman tells Beatrice that she should never tell anyone what she is and that her life is in danger if she does. With only that information, Beatrice goes home and begins trying to decide which faction she'll chose. When the Choosing Day ceremony arrives, Caleb decides to leave the faction for the Erudites and Beatrice initially believes she'll have to remain in Abnegation because she hates the idea of leaving her parents alone. However, she does decide to leave and joins the Dauntless. Once there, she discovers the leaders have lost sight of protecting the city and its residents. Instead, cruelty is taught and expected. She meets a Dauntless nicknamed Four and discovers he's the son of an Abnegation leader. Beatrice manages to survive the initiation process but uncovers a plot hatched by the Erudite to use the Dauntless to overthrow the Abnegation. The Erudites take control of the Dauntless through a simulation device and the members of the Dauntless faction wage a bloody war on the Abnegation. Beatrice's parents fall victim as do others before the situation is brought to a conclusion by Beatrice, Caleb, and Four. As the story comes to a close, the three are taken in by the Amity faction though Beatrice knows they can't hide there forever. |
