In a brief summary of the book, a women gets “kidnapped” at the age of 19 by a man called Old Nick. She is raped by her kidnapper and gets pregnant some time when she is in her early twenties. She has a baby boy who she names Jack, and when the reader begins to read the story, Jack is five years old, which means that his mother, referred to as Ma, is 26 or 27. Jack has lived in “Room” for his entire life and never even seen “Outside”. They do the same thing every day. Wake up, eat breakfast, bathe, play games, read, learn, and run inside around the room for exercise. Every year, on Jack’s birthday, his height gets measured. This year, a few days after his birthday, Ma comes up with a plan to escape from what she calls prison and as far as Jack goes, what he calls home because it’s all he’s known his entire life. When Plan A, fake sick ad have Old Nick take Jack to the hospital, doesn’t work, Ma comes up with Plan B, to fake dead. Jack’s job is to fake dead from illness and be as still and quiet as possible. This is a hard task to ask a five year old boy to do, however somehow Jack accomplishes it once he realizes what is on the line, his mother’s freedom. Jack suffers through rolling around in the bed of the truck and getting injured until Old Nick stops at the third stop sign. That’s when Jack carries through with Ma’s plan. He untangles himself from the blankets, and jumps. Out of the bed of the truck he goes. Then he takes off through the woods causing Old Nick to chase after him. Old Nick eventually catches him, but not before a suspicious bystander notices what’s going on and calls the police. Ma is rescued and she and Jack are safe and in good hands. Although they are rescued from Old Nick, they do not know how to function in the real world and go through the ups and downs of figuring real life out. Ma gets depressed for a few days and attempts suicide, but then while recovering, she realizes her responsibilities and duties she must continue with. Ma is able to turn her life around and raise Jack as a child of her own, even if he is a constant reminder of Old Nick.
