In the book Room, a little boy named Jack goes on a quest which consists of a) a quester b) a place to go c) a stated reason d) challenges and trials and e) a “true” reason for going on the quest. On this quest, Jack is the quester with his place to go being “Outside”. His stated reason for this quest is because Ma told Jack to play dead. With Jack being only five years old and still a child, he faces some challenges that a five year old boy would not face under normal circumstances. He must achieve tasks such as being serious, which is difficult being only five, fake being dead, and escape from a truck bed at a stop sign without getting caught. Here is where more problems occur. Jack gets caught. However Old Nick, Ma’s kidnapper, has to let him go because a witness standing by becomes suspicious and gets Jack to come to him. Once Jack is free from Old Nick, Jack comes the realization that his “true” reason for his quest was to escape and rescue Ma. Over the course of Jack’s quest he undergoes many difficult jobs that may have been confusing to him.
